Artist Statement

These new paintings, beginning with The Structure Series, were inspired by the urban environment that surrounds me. These paintings are a platform for the creative states that I experience as an artist and a human being. The Totem Series, Ribbon Series and The Stripe Series, offshoots of The Structure Series, investigate congregated and communal geometric forms. Through the use of pattern and repetition I am able to formulate a cohesive and opposing balance which perpetuates movement and tension on the playing field. The most recent works portray some of the emotional turmoil and isolation experienced during the pandemic.

The Structure Series has become a metaphor for our conflicting times. Social, political, personal, and economic upheaval is always experienced, processed, and then restructured. These paintings examine the constructs of intellect and emotion through the repetitive use of the square, how it is presented and organized, and how color characterizes the psychology of the works. The honed images from my visual vocabulary are made using only straight edges, tape and palette knife. I also play with the sounds and structural cacophony that inhabits the works in order to feel their strong presence and voice.

Biography

Iris Kufert-Rivo is a geometric painter with a studio at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ. She received her Bachelor of Science from Skidmore College and a Master of Fine Arts from Bard College. The Structure Series explores pattern and repetition of forms inspired by the urban community in which she lives. The painting process is paramount to her creative experience. Made without the use of a brush, Iris uses palette knives and straight edges to propel the pieces forward.  These works relate closely to the artists’ observance of the world she lives in and the climate of the culture around us.

Iris Kufert-Rivo has been a painter for over 35 years. Her works have been exhibited at The Painting Center (NYC), Hidell Brooks Gallery (Charlotte, NC), George Billis Gallery LA (Los Angeles, CA), Dune (NYC), One West End Gallery (NYC), Village One Gallery (NYC), Red Dot Fair at Art Basel (Miami, FL), San Francisco Art Fair, Newell Gallery (NYC), The Morris Museum (Morristown, NJ).
